Admin. has been unable to update until now and preferred to let the Christmas season pass peacefully despite events occurring on the property. Best wishes for a happy new year. This is the short version of the story:
On December 20th, 2019 a hearing at Brampton courthouse was scheduled for the application concerning the demolition permits for the two remaining buildings. The application was not complete and required more time to file. Various delays occurred in November while trying to obtain documentation from the City. The City solicitor also instructed city staff not to communicate with the applicant any further when attempts to confirm correct information were made, making it harder to complete. The applicant needed to adjourn the hearing for a number of reasons. The adjournment was opposed. The applicant succeeded in getting an adjournment from the judge on December 20th, 2019.
The resident who initiated the application with the City, left Brampton courthouse on December 20th, 2019 and arrived back at Tannery house at about 2:45 pm. At the exact time the resident arrived home and drove into the driveway, the gates on the demolition fence were opened by crew who were waiting there. It became obvious in those moments and shortly thereafter when the huge demolition truck came rumbling up the driveway, that the developer NYX had instructed the demolition truck to demolish the building next to Tannery house at that time as a direct act of harassment.
It was a traumatic sight as another demolition by surprise took place all afternoon and well into evening after dark. The manner in which the demolition was executed, sent an explicit message of intimidation to the tenant(s) for simply trying to save their housing. Tenants still continue to lose the benefit of the City’s “demolition control” protection and experienced distress, being subjected to a demolition carried out in what appeared to be a punitive manner.
To make matters worse, an underground broken water pipe has been left and continues to flow water outside since August 2019. NYX refuses to fix it and the yard has become a swamp. Though NYX fenced off the area and quarantined the house, they tore up the yard these past few weeks to create makeshift drains rather than fix the pipe. It does not fix the flooding which is at the doorstep of the house. All of this and more continues to make life difficult for tenants. The demolition truck left yesterday after being parked on site since Dec 20th. Most of the beauty of the garden is destroyed.
