STOP ARMS SHIPMENTS TO WAR ZONES TO SECURE OLYMPIC TRUCE

Das Problem

Ελληνικά|Deutsch|English

FOR A CEASEFIRE (OLYMPIC TRUCE) IT IS IMPORTANT TO STOP ARMS DELIVERIES AND MILITARY SUPPORT TO WAR ZONES AND TO PROMOTE PEACE NEGOTIATIONS

In addition to the observance of a "noble Olympic truce", we also need a "noble interruption of all military support". Only in this way can the warring parties be credibly persuaded to ceasefire and peace negotiations.

The United Nations resolution of 21 November 2023, which was adopted by an overwhelming majority of 118 votes in favour, calls for a ceasefire from 19 July to 15 September 2024 – seven days before the start of the Olympic Games until seven days after the end of the Paralympic Games. This initiative, known as the Olympic Truce (Greek: Ekecheiria), has its origins in ancient times and could play a significant role in world peace today.

How can we demand a ceasefire while weapons continue to be delivered to war zones?"

In a war, not only the countries directly involved should set an example for peace, but also the entire international community.  Above all, the countries that support the warring parties militarily contribute significantly to the continuation of the war and share responsibility for it.

Many of the countries that have signed this resolution supply the warring parties with weapons or support them financially. They can send a strong signal for peace and contribute to the implementation of the resolution by stopping all military support. This would be an important step towards building a more peaceful and better world and securing the Olympic truce.

Our demand

At

  • Emmanuel Macron, President of France
  •  Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
  •  António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations
  •  Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024
  •  The presidents of all countries that make arms deliveries

We, the signatories of this petition, call on you to take a firm stand for the implementation of the United Nations resolution of 21 November 2023. Agree on an immediate end to any planned arms deliveries or financial support for military purposes to Russia, Ukraine, Israel and Hamas during the Olympic and Paralympic Games period.

We appeal to the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, to demand in future resolutions, in addition to a ceasefire, the interruption of all military support to the warring parties as part of the Olympic Truce.

In this way, the Olympic Truce becomes more than just a symbolic gesture – it can make a significant contribution to global peace.

Let's work together to create a world where the spirit of the Games – mutual respect and peace between people and between peoples – becomes a reality.

Please show that you want to give peace a chance.
