Stop Arcadia’s Device Ban: Support Fair Tech Use!
The Issue
We are students at Arcadia who love exploring our creativity through various digital means. Unfortunately, our school is imposing an unjust limitation on us by banning personal computers and forcing us to use Chromebooks. This change will deeply affect students like us, who cannot fully express their creative potential on these limited devices.
Consider that Chromebooks, while effective for basic tasks, lack the processing power and software compatibility needed for more complex, specialized programs such as graphic design, video editing, coding, and 3D modeling. These tools are essential for students pursuing careers in fields like digital media, computer science, and the arts. Limiting access to these resources will hinder not only our creative expression but also our preparation for college and future careers.
Moreover, according to the National Education Association, 3 in 10 students suggest that the technology provided by their school is insufficient for their educational and creative needs. This change at Arcadia will likely exacerbate that issue, leading to frustration and inequality among students.
While the school’s current proposal to allow temporary personal device use with parental and teacher approval is a step in the right direction, it does not solve the core problem. Restricting personal devices to specific, limited tasks or assignments creates unnecessary barriers for students who need these tools consistently. It is an inefficient solution that only addresses short-term needs.
Instead, we propose adopting a 2 strike system, allowing students to use personal devices freely but with accountability. Under this system, students would face appropriate consequences if they misuse the privilege, but they wouldn’t be penalized by overly restrictive rules that prevent them from accessing the technology required for their education. This would encourage responsibility, independence, and fairness, ensuring that students who need these devices can use them while maintaining discipline when necessary.
We believe this balanced system is more effective than temporary, permission-based solutions, and it better supports the diverse needs of the student body. Education is not one-size-fits-all, and neither should our technology policies be. Instead of blanket restrictions, let’s implement thoughtful guidelines that foster responsibility while ensuring that students have access to the tools they need to succeed in today’s technology-driven world.
Therefore, we ask that Arcadia Charter School halt the imposition of these restrictive technology standards and collaborate with students, parents, and educators to create a more equitable, forward-thinking policy that works for everyone. We need your voices to make ours heard. Please sign this petition and stand with us for a more supportive and modern educational environment.
