Stop Anti-2SLGTBQ+ Performance in Charlottetown

Stop Anti-2SLGTBQ+ Performance in Charlottetown
The Issue
Growing up as a bisexual female in Ontario, and now a permenant resident of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, I have faced my fair share of challenges. As an allied healthcare professional, I am dedicated to promoting health, equity, and inclusivity for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Recently, I was deeply troubled to learn about an Anti-2SLGTBQ+ performance that is scheduled to take place in our community on July 24th at Confederation Landing. Such events not only threaten the progress we’ve made towards acceptance and understanding but also pose direct harm to LGBTQ+ individuals in our city by fostering a culture of intolerance and discrimination.
Canada prides itself on being a country that champions diversity and inclusion. According to Statistics Canada, 4% of Canadians identify as 2SLGTBQ+, and many of these individuals belong to our very own community here in Charlottetown. Ensuring that everyone feels safe and accepted is crucial for their mental and emotional well-being. Performances that undermine these values are in stark contrast to Canadian principles of respect and equality.
Allowing an Anti-2SLGTBQ+ event to unfold in Charlottetown would set a dangerous precedent, suggesting that hate and exclusion are acceptable. It could lead to increased stigma and discrimination against 2SLGTBQ+ individuals, which studies have shown can have detrimental effects on mental health, including higher rates of depression and anxiety.
We urge local authorities to cancel this performance and instead, authorize a d promote events that celebrate diversity and unity. By choosing love over hate, we strengthen our community and send a clear message that Charlottetown stands with its 2SLGTBQ+ residents.
Join me in calling on our community leaders to put a stop to this Anti-2SLGTBQ+ performance. Sign this petition and let us continue to build a more inclusive, supportive and safe Charlottetown for everyone.
