I live in a mobile home park and every year, the rent for our lot increases. This wouldn't be as alarming if there were visible improvements to the park or if the general cost of maintenance and other services were going up. However, that’s simply not the case. What I’m witnessing is a disproportionate impact on our elderly residents who are on fixed incomes. Many are struggling to make ends meet, and the continual increase in rent is pushing them to their financial limits.

The issue isn’t just about numbers—it’s about people who have worked their entire lives and sought an affordable option for their living situation in their golden years. It breaks my heart to see these individuals, who should be enjoying their retirement, instead worrying about whether they'll be able to stay in their homes.

Additionally, there is a lack of transparency from park owners about why these annual increases are necessary. Many park residents are not seeing noticeable improvements or increased costs in park amenities or services that would justify such hikes. Mobile home parks are often one of the few affordable housing options available, and these repeated increases undermine their affordability and accessibility.

Here are a few solutions we propose:

1. Opening a dialogue with park owners to discuss ways to stabilize lot rent while ensuring that any increases reflect genuine cost increases or improvements in the park.

2. Implementing a regulatory framework that involves regular review and justification of rent hikes in mobile home parks, thus preventing arbitrary annual increases.

3. Encouraging state and local governments to offer subsidies or financial aid for seniors and low-income residents living in mobile home parks to offset their rent.

The stability and affordability of mobile home living should be preserved, and undue rent increases need to be halted to protect the vulnerable populations residing in these communities.
