Stop Animal Neglect or Lose Tourists, Antigua!

Stop Animal Neglect or Lose Tourists, Antigua!
The Issue
To the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority:
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the ongoing mistreatment and neglect of stray animals in Antigua and Barbuda. As animal lovers and supporters of responsible tourism, we believe that the welfare of animals is a reflection of a nation's compassion and values.
This crisis was on full display during a recent Carnival celebration when a severely emaciated dog, riddled with mange and limping in pain, was not only ignored by most revelers but subjected to further cruelty. This helpless animal was kicked in the face and on the side by some locals and was sprayed with paint. Thankfully, the dog was ultimately rescued by a good samaritan, but this incident highlights the urgent need for change.
The current situation on the island is dire. Stray dogs and cats suffer from starvation, disease, abuse, and overpopulation. The lack of adequate animal welfare laws, enforcement, and resources has allowed this crisis to worsen.
We understand that Antigua and Barbuda is a beautiful country with much to offer visitors, but we cannot in good conscience support a tourism industry that ignores the suffering of animals. We believe that animal welfare and tourism can coexist, and that addressing this issue will benefit both animals and the tourism industry in the long run.
Therefore, we demand the following actions from the government of Antigua and Barbuda:
Enact and Enforce Comprehensive Animal Welfare Laws: Establish clear laws that prohibit animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment. These laws should include provisions for proper care, veterinary treatment, and humane euthanasia when necessary. Enforce these laws with adequate penalties for violators.
Fund and Support Animal Rescues and Shelters: Provide financial assistance to existing animal rescue organizations on the island, and support the establishment of new shelters. This funding should cover veterinary care, food, shelter, and spay/neuter programs.
Implement a National Spay/Neuter Program: Launch a widespread spay/neuter campaign to control the stray animal population humanely and effectively. This should include accessible and affordable spay/neuter services for both owned and stray animals.
Educate the Public: Develop and implement educational programs to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare, and the importance of spaying/neutering. Target schools, communities, and pet owners with this information.
Collaboration: Engage with animal welfare organizations, veterinarians, tourism businesses, and local communities to create a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the stray animal crisis.
We urge the government of Antigua and Barbuda to take immediate action on these demands. Failure to address this issue will result in a growing movement to discourage tourism to the island. We believe that a compassionate and responsible approach to animal welfare will enhance Antigua and Barbuda's reputation as a desirable tourist destination.
We call upon all animal lovers, tourists, and those who care about the future of Antigua and Barbuda to sign this petition and share it widely.
