The Issue

We, the undersigned, are calling on the government of Namibia to implement stricter animal protection laws and to take serious action against animal cruelty. Namibians, especially pet owners, are devastated as animals continue to suffer abuse with little to no consequence. The victims of such acts are not just the animals, but also the families who lose their beloved pets, often in horrific ways.

A heartbreaking example of this cruelty occurred in Swakopmund, where a woman lost her two dogs. She was able to locate her female dog, but upon discovery, she made a gruesome find: her male dog had been stolen, beaten to death with an axe by four men, and then sold to a woman for use in kapana meat. This is not an isolated incident—many other pet owners across Namibia have endured similar tragedies. Think of those who have lost their beloved animals, who have grieved over the senseless and brutal killing of their pets. These abusers often escape justice, being released on bail only to repeat their actions, leaving the cycle of cruelty to continue unchecked.

How many more dogs and cats need to be stolen, tortured, and killed before the authorities recognize that enough is enough? Every day that passes without action is another day where innocent animals suffer, and families continue to face heartbreak without seeing justice. It’s clear that the current legal framework is not sufficient to protect animals, and it is up to us to demand change before this violence becomes even more widespread.

Now is the time to act. As a nation, we cannot sit idly by while animals are subjected to cruelty and suffering. We need a legal system that punishes perpetrators, prevents future crimes, and ensures that animal abuse is treated with the seriousness it deserves. With growing public outrage and support for animal protection, Namibia has a historic opportunity to strengthen its laws and stand up for the welfare of all living creatures. We must act now to protect animals and provide justice for those who can’t speak for themselves.
