On May 9, 2025, our lives were forever altered when my sister and her friend were involved in a tragic accident during Alternative Vehicle Day at Breese Central Community High School District #71. This day, meant to be one of celebration and fun, turned into a devastating event as she lost her best friend in the accident. As a graduate of 2024, I have witnessed such tragedies year after year; it’s time we put an end to this dangerous tradition.

Alternative Vehicle Day might seem like an entertaining way for students to display their creativity and vehicles, but the reality is grim. Each year, there are reports of accidents, some unfortunately resulting in serious injuries or even fatalities. The excitement and joy quickly turn to chaos and heartbreak, affecting not only the immediate families and friends but the entire community of Clinton County, Illinois.

Statistics show that car accidents are a leading cause of injury and death among teenagers in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speed is a significant factor in youth traffic accidents, coupled with the inexperience of young drivers. Adding unconventional vehicles into this mix amplifies the risks considerably. It is time to reevaluate whether such events are worth the possible consequences.

Our goal with this petition is straightforward and crucial - cease the organization of Alternative Vehicle Day at Breese Central High before more tragedies unfold. We suggest implementing safer school events that still celebrate student creativity, such as car shows where vehicles can be displayed without movement, or themed presentations promoting traffic safety.

Let's prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and community. Join us in calling for immediate action to protect our children, siblings, and friends and prevent these avoidable tragedies.
