The Issue

In Allentown, PA, residents like me are facing a sudden and significant increase in trash collection fees. Currently, we pay $415 per year, but starting in 2025, we will be expected to pay $605. This is a $190 increase, all under a new contract with J.P. Mascaro & Sons, based on a survey that residents prefer biweekly pickup. However, it's fair to assume this survey did not include the disclosure of sharp increases. As someone whose landlord has already started charging up to $50 monthly for trash and recycling, a cost made in addition to the typical annual rent increase, this affects us directly. I am sure many other tenants and homeowners in Allentown are feeling similarly frustrated and financially burdened.

With the cost of living continuously rising, this additional financial pressure is particularly distressing. Families and individuals are already adjusting to higher prices on essential goods and services; an abrupt increase in basic service fees feels like a step too far. A decision like this, which impacts nearly every resident of Allentown, should not be made without consulting them first.

It’s crucial that the voices of Allentown residents are heard in matters that directly affect their finances and daily lives. We urge the Allentown City Council to reconsider this decision. Instead, there should be an open dialogue with the community to discuss the necessity and extent of any increases in trash collection fees. Alternative solutions, such as evaluating the efficiency of current operations or even exploring competitive bids for better pricing, should be considered before placing the burden squarely on residents.

Let's stand together to ensure our opinions matter in decisions like these. If you agree that Allentown's trash collection fee increase shouldn't proceed without resident input, please sign this petition.
