Stop Airlines Making Money From Poor Seating

The Issue

Have you experienced a long haul flight in economy? Find yourself struggling to get comfortable even when sitting alone? Do you get ill after the lack of sleep from poor seating on an long haul flight?

My name is Lauren and I have experienced all of this. Recently, I made a trip to Alaska from the UK to see my partner which was a 10-hour flight to Seattle, followed by a 3.5-hour flight to Alaska. Not once did I feel comfortable in Economy class seating, I felt like I was sitting on a bus seat in my hometown. I understand that when you pay less, you have to expect less. But when it comes to long haul flights I find it extremely inhumane to make people pay triple the flight cost just to be able to be comfy.

I am not asking the airlines to give us the perks of Business Class (Better headphones, a bed, a divider for my own space, a wider tv, better options of food, free drinks, better service, a nicer blanket and pillow etc), all I am asking is for flights to allow someone who pays £1.5k on return flights to be given seating that would allow them to sleep at least some of their flight.

We have allowed this for too long. Business Class seating ranges from £5-7k for return flights whereas Economy seating ranges from £1-3k for return flights.

What am I getting at?

Airlines pay out to supply Economy with pillows and blankets (new/used) for long-haul flights, but would you prefer they use their money more wisely and put that money into making the seats comfortable and easy to sink and sleep into? I would happily forfeit the extras for something more humane to deal with. The cost they pay out for laundry would decrease and putting more cushion in the seats would be more cost effective.

If you agree with me and feel that you are fed up of allowing airlines tighten our seat space, lack padding on the seats and find it hard to last a long haul flight then please sign this petition to make them notice our concerns and what we would happily give up to have a good flight.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
