Stop a wind farm from destroying a rain forest in American Samoa.

The Issue

The American Samoa Power Authority have an agreement with 2 Japanese Developers (Nippon Koei and Renova) to construct a windfarm on our islands last sizable intact pristine rainforest. Putting 10 giant windturbines in the middle of this forest where locally protected birds and bats feed and nest will risk their deaths to turbine blade strikes, day and night, everyday for the 25 year lifetime of this project. This forest is also the home of ancient archeological sites and the graves of our ancestors.

A large portion of this unique rainforest will be permanently destroyed and because of the extreme rainfall we experience and steep topography of this and surrounding areas, soil erosion and sedimentation of our coral reefs will almost certainly be a result of the excavation and forest destruction required for this project. Coastal habitats and our fisheries will also be negatively affected.

Our island is small and this intact forest plays a role in groundwater (drinking water) recharge. The potential effects of this project on our drinking water have not been evaluated.

We are not against alternative energy, but feel this forest is not the appropriate site for this windfarm and that site selection was not properly done (see "Le Vaomatua" facebook page).

Please help us save this rainforest from being destroyed by this windfarm.
