Stop 15-Hour Shifts for Truck Driver To European Parliament and the European Commission
Il problema
my name is raman i drive heavy goods vehicles for a living. Every day, I operate a vehicle weighing dozens of tons, carrying an immense responsibility for my own life and the lives of everyone sharing the road with me.
I am launching this petition because current European law (Regulation EC 561/2006) allows transport companies to legally exploit us by stretching our daily duty time up to 15 hours.
On paper, the law states that after a 15-hour shift, we are entitled to 9 hours of rest. However, this mathematical equation only works for drivers who sleep inside their truck cabin at a rest stop. For regional or local drivers who must commute home to their families every evening, these 15-hour shifts are a sentence to extreme physical exhaustion.
Within those remaining 9 hours of "legal rest," we must fit:
Clocking out and completing end-of-shift paperwork.
Commuting home in the evening and back to the depot the next morning.
Showering, eating dinner, managing household chores, and spending time with family.
The reality? We are often left with less than 5 or 6 hours of actual sleep per night.
Operating a massive semi-truck in a state of chronic sleep deprivation is not a job—it is a disaster waiting to happen. Fatigue and falling asleep at the wheel are among the leading causes of fatal accidents involving heavy goods vehicles on European highways. We should not have to risk our lives just to meet tight logistics deadlines.
WHAT WE ARE DEMANDING FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION:
We urgently demand an amendment to the European regulation on driving and rest times to:
Cap the maximum daily duty time at a strict, non-negotiable limit of 12 hours, completely abolishing the allowance for 15-hour shifts.
Guarantee a minimum of 12 consecutive hours of actual rest every single day, ensuring drivers have the real-world time needed to return home, recover properly, and get a decent night's sleep.
Worker health and public road safety must take priority over corporate profits and supply chain speed.
Please sign this petition to end exploitation in the trucking industry and make European roads safer for everyone!
