Give more parking options to SBU students

Give more parking options to SBU students
The Issue
Many students are exhausted with the parking policy here at Stony Brook University. It's already obvious just walking around campus that there's an obscene amount of Faculty/Staff parking lots on campus that are always empty, and If they aren't empty its because students are risking the punishment of a ticket to get to their classes and responsibilities because other parking lots are full or too far. Simply looking at the parking map for SBU, it seems like the university has hired more faculty than they accepted students. But we know this is not the case. SBU has a student/staff ratio of 18:1. This is higher than the national average of 15:1. So not only does this school have more students to staff compared to other colleges but they also claim to be a "Commuter Friendly School". Anyone who has tried to park at SBU will quickly find that this claim is a lie used for marketing. It's only been the second week of classes here at SBU and the parking department has already run out of permits for residents. They are forcing residents to park at commuter lots, which are very far away from the majority of the dorm buildings. Not only is this an inconvenience to residents, but also to commuters as many are complaining that they can not find parking in the giant commuter lots in the mornings because of all the residents who are being forced to park in those lots.
If you try to call the parking services number you will quickly encounter that the line for questions and appeals is out of service, and not taking messages. Does SBU really think they can get away with forcing their students to either risk a ticket or walk to class from a far parking lot and getting late? The classes here are difficult enough on their own we don't need need this added stress to make our lives more difficult. It's time to demand change, Let this petition be known to all your classmates, write the ig handle for this movement (@sbuparkingsucks) on white boards, let it be known that we will sit quiet no longer.
