Keeping The Summit alive and able to print

Keeping The Summit alive and able to print
The Issue
The Summit is one of the oldest clubs on Stonehill’s campus, dating back to 1949 and documenting everything from 9/11 to Red Sox winnings to tragedies on campus. In the past few years, SGA has proposed cutting more and more funding of this club, and is now threatening to discontinue its budget for printing.
A newspaper is a staple at a college. Parents of prospective students look for it, alumni keep up with campus with it, and students use it to showcase their finest achievements, talk about an issue, or in some cases receive valuable education and experience in a newsroom that can lead to jobs post grad, as well as entice new journalism students to contribute to the art.
While the world of journalism does include more and more digital platforms, printing a local newspaper unifies a college in one document in ways that a sea of online stories cannot. Creating a paper gives students the opportunity to get hands-on experience with editing programs and real-world opportunities to work with publishers and businesses for ads.
We need journalism now more than ever. We need good, trained journalists behind the stories and layouts, and this is centralized in a printed paper. Online journalism is important, but please sign to show us that Stonehill still values tradition and is committed to the student voice now more than ever.
