Stockport Council - Re-open The Forum Theatre, Romiley

Stockport Council - Re-open The Forum Theatre, Romiley

The Issue

To Caroline Simpson,

Chief Executive & Place Based Lead

Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council

Following a change to government guidance, The Forum Theatre in Romiley was "temporarily closed" at the beginning of September due to the presence of Reinforced Aerated Autoclave Concrete (RAAC) in the building. Despite assurances from Stockport Council that re-opening the theatre was a high priority, nearly three months on, no decision has been made.

The theatre's team, as well as residents of Romiley and supporters of NK Theatre Arts, are feeling the impact of this prolonged indecision. As a resident and parent with a connection to NK Theatre Arts, the damage is evident. The regular updates from the theatre only underscore the lack of progress, with the team awaiting news from the Council.

The consequences are far-reaching.

The impact on NK Theatre Arts: NK Theatre Arts is a charitable institution that provides a wide range of theatre arts activities for people of all ages and abilities. The closure of the Forum Theatre has meant that NK Theatre Arts has had to cancel or relocate many of its classes, workshops, and performances. This will have a significant impact on the charity's income and its ability to provide its services to the community.

The importance of the theatre to young people: The Forum Theatre is a vital resource for young people in the community. It is a place where they can learn about the arts, develop their skills, and build confidence. The ongoing closure of the theatre has deprived young people of these opportunities.

The impact on the wider community: The Forum Theatre is a popular venue for a wide range of events, including plays, musicals, concerts, and community gatherings. The closure of the theatre has deprived the community of a place to come together and enjoy the arts. It has also had a negative impact on local businesses that rely on the theatre for customers, especially with the cancellation of the Christmas Panto.

In response to the situation, the call is now directed towards Stockport Council to fulfil their commitment to the local community. It is imperative that they move forward with plans to reopen the theatre and address any necessary works highlighted in the commissioned reports.

The plea is clear: this indecision and lack of support from Stockport Council cannot continue. The community is urged to show support by signing a petition and expressing thoughts on the importance of The Forum Theatre to both individuals and the local community at large. It is time for decisive action to preserve the cultural and community significance of this cherished venue.

Stockport Council - you need to get our theatre back open!
