On Thursday, 10/29, the Stillwater School Board will be having an emergency school board meeting to decide if Stillwater will be going to all distance learning at the High School level, and will also be discussing and the potential cancellation of all winter sports.  

This petition is NOT about the hybrid schooling discussion, it surrounds the decision to be made about winter sports, which would be forced to shut down if the school board applies it's consequences of a full-distance learning model to extracurricular activities tied to the school.

Still not sure?  Consider that this pandemic has already taken away more than these kids deserve.  So why rip away winter sports as well?  We need to implore the School Board to SAVE WINTER SPORTS. 

As the parent of two hockey players, I can tell you having seen how the summer hockey camps were run, and how rinks have enacted safety first measures that it feels like the rink is safer than almost anywhere they could go and still lets them be social with their friends, and gives them an outlet for their energy.  Letting these kids sit indoors, alone, and idle all winter with nothing to do is NOT the answer.      

Will there be cases during winter sports seasons?  Almost certainly, but that is what quarantining is for, and it should be OUR choice as parents to take the risk to send them to sports.  Limit the attendance at games, matches or meets, do what you need to do, but this is overreaching. 

If contact tracing is a priority, and if there is a COVID case during winter sports, it will be easier to map out than if a case had come via community transmission.

So please, sign this petition to ensure that the School Board doesn't deny these young adults / seniors an opportunity to play out what for some might be the last organized athletic season of their careers, please.
