Stop Steyning Grammar School becoming an academy started this petition to Steyning Grammar School Chair of Governors

We, the undersigned, call upon the Governors at Steyning Grammar School to halt the damaging plans to privatise our community school, and hand it over to a multi-academy trust.

We do not accept or want to see Steyning Grammar School handed over from the local authority to a multi-academy trust and do not believe that academisation and the removal of local democratic accountability is necessary to improve the school facilities.

Steyning Grammar School is a 400 year old asset which belongs to the whole community. It's unique features have been protected as part of the local authority family of schools for decades.

We have serious concerns about Steyning Grammar School joining a multi-academy trust because:

1.     After more than 10 years of the academy school project, there is no evidence that academies improve outcomes for children or raise standards

2.     Evidence shows that schools that remain under council control improve faster than schools which convert to academy status

3.     Academy schools are free to employ unqualified teachers and pay them less

4.     Steyning Grammar School belongs to the community. It has retained it's unique features within the West Sussex family of schools for decades. Joining an unaccountable academy trust threatens this status

5.     Multi-academy trusts are less accountable to parents and the local community

6.     Academy schools do not receive any extra money and many trusts are in financial difficulty.

7.     Multi-academy trusts have been criticised for excessive salaries and expenses for CEOs, which diverts money away from the classroom.

8.     Becoming an academy is a permanent decision that cannot be reversed.

Steyning Grammar School can improve it's facilities without joining an unaccountable multi-academy trust and governors should work with the local authority to achieve this.
