Stop the cull of Wombats by the SA Government
Why this petition matters
The South Australia Government has granted a farmer permission to cull up to 200 Southern Hairy Nosed Wombats. The planned cull will take place near Point Pearce, SA on Aboriginal owned farmland.
According to the traditional owners and Adjahdura/Narungga and Ngadjuri elders, the farmer who rents the land from the Aboriginal Community is having his equipment damaged when he runs over the animals.
Wildlife researcher Mike Swinbourne with the University of Adelaide said "there is no justification for killing so many of the creatures".
"If you were to kill that many Wombats, you would decimate the population on the peninsula and you could not justify that", he said.
It is estimated that there are 600 to 800 Wombats on the entire Yorke Peninsula. Culling 200 would take around 30% of the local population. We should be protecting these native animals.
Steven Marshall (South Australia Premier), we need to you to stop this needless slaughter of native animals. Farmers must find ways of living along side Australia's indigenous animals and not simply kill them to suit their own agenda.
