Amend the Lumpkin County Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption

Amend the Lumpkin County Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption

The Issue

Sign this petition if you would like to see the Lumpkin County Senior Homestead Exemption amended to age 70 and the School Board Exemption reduced to $150,000.

Let's make smart fiscal decisions! The population over 65 is growing and the middle class in a Lumpkin County should not have to shoulder the tax burden alone.

In 2015, 40% of seniors taking the senior homestead exemption pay NOTHING in property taxes.  WE CANNOT FIND ANOTHER COUNTY THAT PROVIDES SUCH A LAVISH EXEMPTION.  Additionally, 80% of the seniors with the exemption pay NOTHING in school taxes.  All of these taxes that are not being paid by seniors are shifted onto the backs of those 65.

In 2015, the county and school tax shift was $4.1million.  In the seven years since the exemption began, the tax shift has doubled.  In 2015, there were still more and more seniors moving to the area and turning 65, so we have not seen the peak of the tax shift.

The middle class, whose annual median income is $43,775, supporting an ever increasing senior population makes poor fiscal policy.  These exemptions are not need based and for the fiscal health of the county, city and schools, an amendment needs to be passed.  Sign this petition if you agree!  And please share with your friends.
