Columbia Gas: Fix leaking gas pipes and stop charging ratepayers for lost gas!

According to information obtained from our utility companies, there are over 500 ongoing gas leaks throughout the City of Springfield.

At the same time as the Columbia Gas infrastructure is leaking valuable resources into the atmosphere, the cost is getting passed onto ratepayers, that means if you heat or cook with natural gas, YOU are paying the price for the lost gas!

According to the organization HEET MA (Home Energy Efficiency Team) the cost of this lost gas was over $2.3 million in 2014

Currently, gas companies are not required to fix leaks unless they are deemed "potentially explosive." But the dangers of gas leaks go beyond explosion: natural gas is harmful to public health, and the environment.

This isn't just an issue for Springfield, but one that impacts the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In Northampton, community groups are working to bring awareness to over 100 natural gas leaks and over $600,000 in lost gas.

The Springfield Climate Justice Coalition has sent a letter to Columbia Gas asking for a meeting and a plan to address this, and is awaiting a response.

Sign this petition to demand a plan from Columbia Gas to repair these ongoing gas leaks, and in the meantime, tell them to STOP CHARGING US for their leaking infrastructure.
