Statutory workplace protections for employees with chronic gynaecological conditions

Statutory workplace protections for employees with chronic gynaecological conditions
The issue
Introduce statutory workplace protections for employees with chronic gynaecological conditions.
Chronic gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, PMOS, PMDD, fibroids and chronic pelvic pain disorders can cause debilitating pain, fatigue, heavy bleeding, gastrointestinal symptoms and other life-changing complications that significantly affect a person's ability to work.
Despite this, many people are forced to use annual leave for medical appointments, lose income during flare-ups, exhaust their sick pay entitlement, or face disciplinary action because of symptoms they cannot control. Many also require repeated surgeries, specialist treatment and lengthy recovery periods throughout their lives.
Endometriosis alone affects approximately 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth, with around 1.5 million people living with the condition in the UK. Research has shown that 1 in 6 people with endometriosis leave the workplace because of their condition, while the condition costs the UK economy an estimated £8.2 billion each year through lost productivity and healthcare costs.
We believe no one should have to choose between their health and their livelihood because of an incurable chronic condition.
We call on the Government to introduce statutory workplace protections for people with diagnosed chronic gynaecological conditions, including:
• A right to reasonable workplace adjustments
• Protection from absence-related disciplinary action
• Paid leave for specialist appointments, treatment, surgery and recovery
• Clear national guidance for employers on supporting employees with chronic gynaecological conditions
These changes would help people remain in employment, reduce financial hardship, improve wellbeing and create fairer workplaces for millions of people across the UK.
