Shut down New Horizons Service Dogs program
Shut down New Horizons Service Dogs program
The Issue
New Horizons is a Non-Profit program that breeds Golden Retrievers to become service dogs. These dogs are placed with puppy raisers prior to going into a prison training program.
The breeder dogs are artificially impregnated once to twice a year, and are forced to deliver their puppies through a C-section. The organization impregnates the dogs a minimum of four times and must cut over the scar tissue each time, never fully allowing the dogs to heal.
When the puppies are born, the company reports that fewer were born so that they can sell off the extra dogs for a profit off $1200-$5000 each. A profit that goes unreported to the IRS.
The puppies that do get placed into the program live outside with limited access to water, until they are assigned a puppy raiser. The puppies are covered in fleas and ticks and it takes weeks of treatment to get rid of the pests. The dogs go untreated until they are assigned a puppy raiser, and oftentimes are covered so badly in fleas that they begin biting their skin open to relieve the pain.
The puppy raisers, who are typically college students at Stetson University, are given a binder with instructions, and rarely hear from the company after that. If the dog gets sick, it is up to the puppy raiser to pay for its veterinary visits. While New Horizons pays for the necessary shots and vaccinations, they fail to keep up with when the dogs need to be vaccinated. It is not until the puppy raiser expresses concern that the company will give the dogs the shots.
When the puppy raisers give the dogs back, New Horizons sends them on to their way to the next training program - a prison in Miami- and the puppy raisers never hear from the company again.
It is essential to shut down this company so that the breeder dogs are not mistreated and the puppies are not neglected.
