Philadelphia Democratic Progressive Caucus
Jul 23, 2014
First the good news.
In just 3 days of running this petition, we already have 2800 supporters. That's huge news, and people are starting to take notice. We're hearing rumors that Republican Rep. John Taylor was caught off guard by the strong reaction, and his staff is personally emailing people in his district not to share this petition.
Rep. Jordan Harris also tweeted that he spoke with Taylor, and he says Taylor won't go after the permits for any of the existing pop-up gardens. So we've succeeded in putting the pop-up opponents on defense, and have sent a clear message to undecided Philadelphia lawmakers that not protecting the pop-ups is a political loser.
Now for the bad news.
These lawmakers haven't backed off yet, and we're hearing that an amendment is still on Taylor's agenda for later this fall - after you've stopped paying attention. We're also hearing that this effort is being driven by a very strong and deep-pocketed opponent - the PA Tavern Owners' Association, who represent liquor license owners who don't want to compete with the pop-ups.
They're in this for the long haul, and we have to be too. That's why we're asking for you help again today to share this petition on Facebook and Twitter, so we can get 3000 signatures before the end of the day today.
We are also going to be purchasing a Facebook and need to raise $200. A few of you lent your support yesterday, and we greatly appreciate that and plan to use your money wisely. If you want to support this effort, please sign up for our Young Progressive Philly happy hour and make a donation when you write in the ticket price.
