Helping Women and Couples with Infertility Costs
The Issue
Dear Senator,
I am writing to share my infertility story with you. The United States' medical system is broken, but not beyond repair. I hope that by sharing my experiences, you will help me, and the many others like me, achieve our dreams of raising a family.
Last week we found out our baby won’t make it. Our hopes and dreams of holding and raising our little one are gone. We are devastated. But on top of that devastation, we also worried at the thought that we may not be able to afford to try again. You see, we represent a terrible statistic here in the United States: We are the 1 in 8 couples who struggle with infertility.
Due to two ectopic pregnancies, I no longer have my fallopian tubes, and any hopes of bearing a child will have to be through in vitro fertilization (IVF). While we are grateful that such treatments are available, we are saddened that these fertility treatments in the United States are so expensive.
When we began to look at all options for IVF, we felt hopeless due to the expense. If a couple chooses to go the fertility treatment route, they are typically in for a rude awakening. The average cost for one round of IVF is around $10,000 to $20,000, plus an additional $5,000-$8,000 for medications, and then all of the additional fees you don’t even think about. My husband and I found a glimmer of hope when we looked into taking the route another family member took in doing IVF with a top fertility clinic in Europe. Our family members have perfect twins thanks to this specialist and his clinic with their advanced technology, labs, and success rates.
This option of traveling and living in Europe for two months, plus doing the treatment was still less than half the price it would have cost us to do one round of IVF here in the states. Surprisingly, our employers were extremely supportive and we got the time off to make our dreams come true. We were to fly out to Europe on March 17, 2020. Our bags were packed, our apartment was rented, and a doctor was waiting for us. Unfortunately, the current worldwide pandemic shattered our dreams. With no other options, we used our savings to do IVF here in the States, to no avail.
Why is the cost of IVF 3 to 5 times more expensive than doing IVF at a top clinic in Europe, Asia or Latin America? And why is it that in the United States I am more supported in not having a child than in having one? As a woman, I have full support from our insurance companies and the government to help me access birth control and terminate a pregnancy. But I do not have help to conceive a child? A piece of my body--the piece that brings new life into this world--is broken. So I ask you, why is it not a priority to bring healthy babies into loving homes? Why does this disability not deserve consideration or support?
The last concern we should have while losing a baby is wondering when and if we can afford to try again. You may be thinking, "Why don’t they just adopt?" This is something we actually hope to do. But please realize that adoption is not as simple as going to the local grocery store to pick up a child and take it home. The average cost of adoption is $40,000 to $50,000 if you get picked. And foster care can be a very difficult route because the goal of foster care is reunification with the parent or family member.
My story may sound familiar to you because it is very likely that you know someone who has struggled, or is currently struggling, with infertility. Maybe you and your families have even struggled with it. I know you have the power to help solve this very serious problem that 1 in 8 United States couples face. Please help us make this terrible burden lighter.
I couldn't save our precious little one, not with my tears or many petitions to Heaven. But maybe, just maybe, we can work together to bring healthy babies into homes where they will be loved and cherished.
