War at Home: They Fought For You So Fight For Them. Provide appropriate mental health services to homeless veterans in a timely and affordable manner that is easily accessible.
The Issue
On any given night in North Carolina there are 57,849 homeless veterans. 45% of those veterans suffer from untreated mental illness such as, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Schizophrenia, and Depression and Anxiety. Though there are organizations that reach out to homeless veterans, it is not enough. With an estimated 500,000 homeless veterans throughout the year, the Veteran Affairs Hospital (VA) only reaches 20% of those in need, leaving 400,000 plus veterans without needed mental health services. The percent of veterans that receive treatment from the VA may currently be lower than 20% given the revelations that VA hospitals have suppressed information about long waiting lists. Join the movement of making North Carolina Legislatures Thom Tillis, C. Robert Brawley, and Larry Pittman aware of this issue in efforts of bringing mental health services to the men and women of our country who need and deserve it.
