Let SB100, The Fairness in Housing and Employment Bill, Be Heard and Voted On

The Issue

HB-100, the Fairness and Housing and Employment Bill, has just had a moratorium placed on it by Rebecca Lockhart, the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the state of Utah. She feels that while the Kitchener v. Herbert has not played its way out to the Supreme Court, that it and marriage bills should not be considered, a process that is likely to take two years as the battle of marriage equality rages in Utah.

Two out of 3 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have suffered discrimination with regards to obtaining housing and employment in the state of Utah, a state that encourages people to work, to have a living, and to contribute to the state's overall welfare.

Senator Urquhart, realizing this urgency crafted a bill that adds two simple and distinct, yet needed, phrases to the current antidiscrimination ordinances statewide: gender identity and sexual orientation.

Is this in retaliation for the 1,300 marriages that just occurred in Utah? Is she that cold-hearted that she would rather see 20% of the state's population out on the streets. Is her heart so hardened against people who simply want to be who they are and love who they love?

Over 70% of people polled in the state of Utah believe in the equity that this bill introduces, which has nothing to do with marriage equality, so why should LGBT people wait for the same protections that everyone else has? Would you turn your children out into the snow?
