Petition to review the current residential zoning of Carnegie
The issue
We demand a review of the current zoning and the scale and density of development allowed under the current zoning in the suburb of Carnegie.
The plan for the implementation of Melbourne 2030 shows stakeholder and public consultation as key aspects of the process.1 This consultation has not occurred and developments are already commencing.
The current Victorian government ‘2030 Planning for Sustainable Growth Strategy’ states that greater consideration will be given to heritage, urban design and safety.2 The current plans have not considered this nor the impact on the community.
Carnegie has been identified as an area for growth in housing. Housing has grown substantially in Carnegie over recent years. Traffic is heavier, trains and buses are crowded, parking is increasingly difficult to find at the local shops, and Carnegie Primary School is now zoned, limiting the intake of students.
The number of multi-unit dwellings currently under construction and approved for construction will have a further significant and adverse impact on the suburb and community.
Enough is enough. It’s time to halt further high density development and review the zones and density, in order to safeguard the sustainability of infrastructure, aesthetics and safety of our suburb.
Our main grounds for demanding a review of the zoning of Carnegie are:
1) Lack of community consultation with those impacted by the zone changes.
2) An inappropriate scale of development being allowed.
- Effect on existing community has not been considered, inability for existing infrastructure to cope with the increased population.
3) An unsustainable increase in traffic and the effect of this on the safety of residents, especially pre-schoolers, school children and the elderly.
4) Inadequate assessment, control and oversight of the number of high density developments approved in the suburb.
