Removal of Dossier Process for Teacher License Advancement

The Issue

In the state of New Mexico, teachers are required to complete a Professional Development Dossier in order to advance from Teaching License Level 1 (and Level 1 pay), to Teaching License Level 2 (and Level 2 pay) The Dossier is a long, cumbersome process that wastes valuable educator time and requires Educators to justify themselves as acceptable teachers. This Professional Development Dossier takes dozens of hours of work that would be better spent on preparation for work with actual students.

The Professional Development Dossier has to be repeated again in order to move to a License Level 3. This step also requires a Masters Degree.

The Professional Development Dossier requirement is disrespectful to Educators and their work with our youth. In no other profession do you receive an advanced degree as well as a license, then have to justify to someone through a long and drawn out paper why you deserve to keep your job after 3 years.

If Educators do not pass the Professional Development Dossier between the time they become eligible to write it (after 3 years of service), and their 5th year, the State of New Mexico takes their Teaching License away. Many leave the field entirely.

The State Of New Mexico, like many areas across the country, is facing a massive shortfall of licensed Educators. The Professional Development Dossier is another hurdle that adds to this shortfall by removing Educators who want to be teaching from classrooms. This petition is asking for the removal of the Professional Development Dossier from License advancement. Instead, allow teachers with enough years served to advance without the added hurdle.
