We, the undersigned, state our support for Missouri’s implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). By establishing fewer, higher and clearer academic benchmarks, the standards will enable students, with the help of parents and teachers, to best prepare for success in college and careers.
The Common Core State Standards are high-quality academic expectations in English/language arts (ELA) and mathematics that define the knowledge and skills all students should know and be able to do to be on track for success in college and careers. The standards promote critical thinking and reasoning skills that students need.
The advantages of the Common Core State Standards include:
• Fewer and consistent learning goals for all students – regardless of where they live – so that children will stay on track in school when moving from one state to another.
• A clear roadmap of academic expectations, so that students, parents and teachers can work together toward shared goals.
• Relevance to the real world, focusing on the knowledge and skills students will need to succeed in life after high school, in both post-secondary education and a globally competitive workforce.
• Academically rigorous, attainable standards for students, designed by a diverse team of teachers, parents, administrators, researchers and content experts to be practical for teachers and districts.
They do not tell teachers how to teach. There is no mandated curriculum. They simply raise the standards for what students should know at each stage in their academic careers.
The standards will provide Missouri teachers and schools with a greater opportunity to share best practices, increasing the efficiency of our education system as a whole.
We believe the Common Core State Standards will help provide our students and their families with the first-rate education they deserve and that will ensure Missouri reaches the Top 10 performing states by the year 2020.
