Rename The Mario Cuomo Bridge to the Welles Crowther Memorial Bridge

The Issue

We need to get the Cuomo family name off the bridge. I know many people say it should be named the Tappan Zee Bridge as it was, but this is a new bridge. That’s why I believe it should have a new name as well.
I believe the new bridge should be named The Welles Crowther Memorial Bridge. This is the perfect opportunity to honor this hero and also never forget 9/11.
Welles grew up nearby the bridge in the town of Nyack, NY. At age 16 he joined his father and became a junior member of the Empire Hook and Ladder company. He then went on to Boston College and was a member of the lacrosse team there. In 1999, Crowther graduated with honors with a degree in economics. He subsequently moved to New York City, taking a job as an equities trader for Sandler O'Neill and Partners, settling into an office on the 104th floor of South Tower of the World Trade Center.

He heroically saved the lives of at least 18 people in the South Tower on 9/11. Tragically that day he lost his life trying to save as many people as he could. His story of heroism later came to be told by the people he saved. The reason these people recognized him was because of something his father gave him when he was 6 years old. He gave him a red bandana which became Welles signature. He wore it the rest of his life. As survivors started to tell their stories of this tragic day, many people around Welles floor in the South Tower told the story of “The Man in the Red Bandana.” They told how he searched, found, and escorted multiple groups of people to safety. With each group he could have left, but he kept going back to try to save as many lives as he could.
Welles was a true hero. The bridge should be named in his honor. It’s nickname could be the “Red Bandana”, and should be lit up in red every night.  It will be a reminder to everyone that drives over it that even in the face of ultimate adversity, you can always help out the people around you. Please help and try to get this to the proper people that can make this happen.
