Reduce the Road Tax applicable on Motor Vehicles in the State of Karnataka

Reduce the Road Tax applicable on Motor Vehicles in the State of Karnataka
The Issue
Due to the Corona Virus Pandemic, it has become imperative to follow the strict social distancing protocols for the health and safety of everybody. Travelling by public transport has become dangerous and unsafe. It is necessary to have a personal vehicle for transporting yourself and your family. Every person who depended on public transport is now facing risks related to the Pandemic.
Purchasing a vehicle in the State of Karnataka is a costlier affair than any other state in India. The Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1957 ("Act") mandates a minimum of 10% of the On-Road Cost of the Vehicle (2 and 4 wheeler) to be paid as road tax. This tax rate varies depending on the class of the vehicle and only increases further.
For an INR 200000 vehicle, a steep tax of INR 20000 (minimum) is payable. In comparison, other states charge lesser amounts as tax and are uniquely benefitted during these trying times.
We, the residents of the State of Karnataka must petition the Government to exempt or reduce the applicable road tax. Due to the extraordinary circumstances and in the public interest, the State Government has the authority to exempt or reduce the applicable road tax as per Section 16 of the Act.
Purchasing a vehicle is no more a matter of luxury, but has become a necessity in these trying times. The State Government must recognise the hardships faced by citizens and must take appropriate action.
