State Department: demand El Salvador lets US senators meet Kilmar Abrego Garcia in prison
The Issue
In March 2025, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, was wrongfully deported to El Salvador despite a U.S. court order prohibiting his removal. He is currently imprisoned in El Salvador’s maximum-security facility, CECOT, without any formal charges or evidence linking him to criminal activity.
The Supreme Court ruled the US has to “facilitate” his return from a brutal El Salvador prison.
This week Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland has traveled to El Salvador to assess Garcia's well-being.
However, Salvadoran authorities denied the senator’s request to meet with Garcia, raising serious concerns about transparency and human rights.
Senator Van Hollen was refused a virtual and in-person meeting, in addition to being denied a request to facilitate a phone call between Abrego Garcia and his family.
In a video post shortly before departing, the senator said that his goal was to show the Trump administration and El Salvador's government "that we are going to keep fighting to bring Abrego Garcia home until he returns to his family."
We call upon the U.S. State Department to demand that El Salvador grant U.S. officials access to Kilmar Abrego Garcia to verify his condition and ensure his rights are being upheld.
Sign this petition to stand for justice, uphold the rule of law, and protect the rights of individuals against unlawful detention.
