No Homework More Freedom

No Homework More Freedom
The Issue
I want for Cristo Rey to not have homework every day. Homework does not impact us but just reminds us of what we learned that day as we forget when days go on. As teens we do have other worries and homework may get in the way, damaging our grades. Homework being constantly given every day gives us pressure and mental breakdowns. Homework impacts time spent with family, friends, and pets. Homework is said to not impact students in standardized tests, as for students who don’t get homework every day are most likely to pass an important exam. If this school wants to emphasize and lead us to be more social, go outside more, play sports, etc. then why give us homework. Homework differs throughout students as not all of us take the same time we need. I take around two to three hours because either I am having difficulty with it or I’m just worrying about it being close to perfect so it won’t affect my grade. I have to do dishes, wash clothes, clean my room and what time do I have? None. If students at Cristo Rey would have the freedom of not having homework we would come to school happy and energetic to learn, but instead we dread the homework we are getting again and again as it is constant. We may also be afraid to be put down because we didn’t bring it or didn’t bring any materials needed. Every single thing is observed at this school which is not a good thing. Without a bit of freedom our society and environment becomes stressful and any little bit of freedom is an overload and is why we don’t behave sometimes because we aren’t used to having that relief or slight piece of freedom. I have cried and stressed over homework, as impossible as it sounds it’s too much for me. I love challenges, but when these challenges pile on and on in a constant path that’s when I can’t function and overthink things, which later on effect my grades and myself. Homework isn’t always easy and for school to be involved at home isn’t fair to students. As teachers and staff have taught me, your home situation should never be involved with school but why not the other way around?
