Free health care

The Issue

Every year in the United States, the number of individuals increases as they are unable to afford medically related aspects. Aetna, a well-known health care company, shares several statistics about the struggles of diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and heart attacks and how minority groups are negatively affected more than white people. Aetna shares that “African Americans are much more likely than people in other racial/ethnic people groups to die from heart disease and stroke. Heart disease and stroke are the biggest reasons for inequality in life expectancy between whites and African Americans.” Providing free health care benefits to minority groups can decrease the number of people who suffer from such horrible diseases. Another shocking statistic is that with diabetes, “African Americans are twice as likely as whites to have diabetes. Hispanics are 1.7 times as likely as whites. Hispanics are also 1.5 times more likely to die from diabetes. American Indians and Alaska Natives are twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites of similar ages.” Continuing, in the June 2017 article titled Minorities more likely than whites to get ‘low-value’ health care, CNBC analyzes the fact many “‘Most notably, black and Hispanic patients with dementia faced significantly greater odds of inappropriately receiving feeding tubes, compared to white patients,’ the report said. Less than 5 percent of white Medicare patients with dementia received a feeding tube. That compares to more than 17 percent of black patients and 13 percent of Hispanic patients with dementia, according to the authors.” Overall, many individuals that come from lower-income communities may receive worse health care treatments than those who can afford it. It is a struggle to pay for medical exams needed for schools, to pay for what insurance does not cover, and even paying for medical treatments needed for injuries and diseases. Allowing free health care for individuals who need it may provide equality, decreasing the number of deaths in minority groups.
