State action needed to address speeding on Atlantic Street in Milton DE
The Issue
Residents of Milton, Delaware are requesting immediate action from the State of Delaware to address dangerous speeding on Atlantic Street, a state-maintained road in a residential and historic neighborhood.
Atlantic Street is narrow, has no shoulders, and homes sit close to the roadway. Despite this, vehicles regularly travel at excessive speeds, creating a serious safety risk.
This danger is documented. Vehicles have left the roadway and struck homes, including 207 Atlantic Street, where a vehicle entered the structure. At least one other home has experienced a vehicle landing inside the home.
The street includes older residents, families with children, and others who require a safer environment. Some residents avoid basic activities like walking their dogs or checking their mail due to speeding traffic.
A 2021 community report identified Atlantic Street as a top concern, with speeding as the number one issue. No effective action has followed and one resident noticed a DECREASE in police presence in 2021 without current resolution.
Residents have raised concerns with both local and state officials, yet responses have remained limited. Enforcement coverage for eastbound traffic does not consistently align with peak early morning speeding times due to “shift changes” and proposed safety measures have been dismissed or delayed without clear follow-through or community verification.
Because Atlantic Street is a state road, the State has the authority to act.
We request:
- Digital speed display signs on both approaches placed from 202-218 Atlantic Street.
- Traffic data collection tubes near 202–218 Atlantic Street.
- Formal review of the 2021 report identifying speeding as the #1 concern of the residents, and mentioning Atlantic Street in particular.
- Public findings and a clear action plan that the State can oversee and enact.
These are practical, appropriate first steps.
Residents should not feel unsafe outside their homes.
We are requesting immediate, measurable action from the State of Delaware.
