Start Western Australian schools later

Start Western Australian schools later
The issue
Dear Member of Parliament,
I am writing to raise concerns about early school start times in Western Australia. Many families, especially single parents, struggle with children needing to wake up very early to travel to school. This often results in students arriving tired and less able to concentrate during their first classes.
Research shows that adolescents have different sleep cycles than adults, requiring them to sleep later in the morning. According to the Sleep Health Foundation, teenagers need about 9 to 10 hours of sleep, but only 15% report getting more than 8.5 hours on school nights. This sleep deprivation impacts their cognitive function, mood, and overall health, which, in turn, diminishes their academic performance and well-being.
Several studies have demonstrated that later school start times lead to improved attendance rates, higher academic achievements, and better mental health among students. For instance, a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics highlighted that starting school later helps align with teenagers' biological sleep rhythms, promoting better rest and resulting in overall enhanced student performance.
Additionally, later start times would greatly benefit families, particularly single-parent households. It offers a smoother morning routine, allowing parents to better manage their work schedules and reduce morning stress. Parents would no longer need to rush their children out the door, creating a calmer start to the day that can positively impact family dynamics.
A study conducted in the UK further supports that schools with later start times observed increased student punctuality and less morning absenteeism. Implementing a start time of 9:30 am or 10:00 am could therefore provide the same benefits, fostering a learning environment where students are well-rested and ready to engage.
I urge the Western Australian government to consider reviewing school start times and introduce a pilot program in select schools to experiment with these later schedules. By doing so, we could gather data specific to Western Australian contexts and evaluate the potential benefits firsthand.
Please sign this petition to support reviewing and potentially changing school start times in Western Australia, ensuring a brighter and more productive future for our children. Your support can make a tangible difference in the lives of students and families across the state. Let's work together for a healthier, happier, and more successful student community.
