The Issue

The University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) should establish a chapter of the "Legal Scholars Society," a professional and academic student organization dedicated to promoting a structured preparation for law school and law-adjacent careers through intentional, skill-based, and community-centered programming.

Having a Legal Scholars Society chapter would not only complement UMGC's existing academic offerings but also foster a thriving community of aspiring legal professionals and academics. By providing a space for engaging discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities, the Society would be instrumental in nurturing student interest in legal studies and public policy, as well as preparing them for successful legal careers.

According to the American Bar Association, participation in law-related extracurricular activities significantly enhances students' understanding of legal principles and their ability to apply these concepts in real-world scenarios. Establishing this Society would align students' educational experiences with industry expectations and promote ethical and analytical thinking essential for legal professionals.

Furthermore, the Society can serve as a bridge between students and industry experts, offering mentorship programs, guest lectures, and internship opportunities. In doing so, it would leverage UMGC's extensive network to provide valuable exposure to various law fields, including criminal justice, civil rights, environmental law, and international law.

We urge the leadership of UMGC to consider this proposal seriously. By supporting the formation of the Legal Scholars Society, UMGC will significantly enhance its commitment to providing comprehensive education and leadership development.

Please sign this petition to show your support for the establishment of the Legal Scholars Society chapter at UMGC and help us create an enriching platform for future legal scholars and practitioners. Your signature can make a significant impact in promoting law education and professional growth at our university.
