Start the Conversation of Suicide Prevention at Mason High School

For the past 9 years, I have lived in Mason and been a part of Mason City Schools. During this time, our High School has averaged one suicide per year. This past weekend, once again, students were left processing and asking why someone who was a part of the Comet family decided to take their life.
Nine suicides are Nine too many and yet our district has done very little to take aggressive action to prevent this.
There have been plenty of efforts by organizations within the High School to create a dialogue around suicide, yet they have been shut down or censored. Rendering their efforts ineffective.
Sadly, there is a stigma surrounding suicide. A stigma that leads to students saying quiet or not helping their friends. Mason High School continues to build upon this stigma by not taking a position and keeping very quiet about their efforts.
As a student who went through a period of depression and has learned to understand a copious amount of mental health issues from family members, I know that our district is going about preventing suicide the wrong way. This claim can be backed up by professionals in the field.
I created this petition to show that students within the district are tired of passive reaction. I've had enough and so have the people who sign this. My goal is to work with the student body and administration to come up with authentic ways to go about prevention.
