Start gritting the R341 and improve the bus services

The Issue

The local communities request that Galway County Council grit the R341 and R342 when it is necessary.  We request that the R341 and R342 are added to the council's winter roads program.

The R341, which runs through Ballinafad, Roundstone, Murvey, Ballyconneely and Ardbear and ending in Clifden, and the R342, which runs through Cashel, do not get gritted when it is necessary. The local community has many different concerns, including the following:

Safety Concerns:

Slippery Roads: Without gritting, roads can become slippery and hazardous, especially during icy conditions. This poses a significant risk to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Accident Rates: Increased slipperiness can lead to a higher incidence of accidents, including collisions and falls. This jeopardises the safety of everyone using the roads.

Community Impact:

Isolation: Inadequately maintained roads can isolate communities, making it challenging for residents to access essential services, such as healthcare facilities, grocery stores, and public amenities. This is a very big problem in rural Connemara as there are many people who rely on public services and require driving on the road.
Economic Impact: Businesses may suffer as employees and customers struggle to reach their destinations. This can lead to economic losses for the local community and there are many local run businesses along the R341 and R342.

Local link: The local bus that runs from Carraroe to Clifden, Route 432, does not run when the roads are not gritted. A lot of people rely on this bus service to travel to other local villages and towns to access essential services.

Education Disruptions:

School Attendance: Poor road conditions can impede children's ability to get to school safely. The buses do not run when the road is gritted, and Clifden Community School is situated on the R341, so children cannot take the school bus to school, which leads to parents having to drive to school. Parents may be reluctant to send their children out in treacherous conditions, leading to increased absenteeism.
Educational Performance: Frequent disruptions to school attendance can impact the continuity of education, potentially affecting academic performance and overall learning outcomes.

Public Health:

Medical Access: Poor road conditions can hinder access to medical facilities, making it difficult for individuals to receive timely medical attention during emergencies.
Mental Health: Prolonged disruptions and isolation due to inaccessible roads can contribute to stress and anxiety among community members.

Emergency Response: Emergency services may face delays in reaching their destinations, putting lives at risk in critical situations.

The community emphasises that maintaining safe roads, including gritting during adverse weather, is a fundamental responsibility of Galway County Council. We must also encourage community members to voice their concerns and collaborate with local government to find solutions that address the unique needs of the area.

We would like to advocate for long-term investments in infrastructure, including better road maintenance equipment and materials for gritting for the R341 and R342. And we would like to encourage ongoing dialogue between local authorities, residents, and schools to develop comprehensive plans for dealing with adverse weather conditions.
