Start Age restrictions on Books, teachings & information to prevent harmful indoctrination
The Issue
Petition to the UK Government: Protecting Children from Harmful Information
We, the undersigned, call upon the UK Government to implement urgent legislative changes to protect children from books, information, and teachings deemed unsuitable for their developmental stage. We believe the current lack of regulation leaves children vulnerable to:
Developmental confusion: Hindering their ability to process complex ideas appropriately.
Formation of skewed worldviews: Leading to distorted understandings of society and morality.
Increased susceptibility to manipulation: Making them more vulnerable to harmful ideologies.
Difficulty distinguishing fact from opinion: Impairing their critical evaluation skills.
Emotional vulnerability: Exposing them to content they are not emotionally equipped to handle.
Hindered development of critical thinking: Undermining their capacity for independent thought.
A reduced capacity for empathy: Desensitising them to the experiences of others.
Just as we protect children through age restrictions on violent movies, alcohol, cigarettes, and pornography, we must extend these protections to the information they consume through books and teachings. The known negative effects of unfiltered exposure necessitate immediate action.
Our Key Proposals:
Age-Rating System for Books: Introduce a mandatory age-rating system for books, similar to film classifications (e.g., PG, 12, 18). This system should apply to both fiction and non-fiction, new and old publications, and encompass all forms of printed and digital books accessible to children.
Content requiring consideration for restriction includes:
Books that explicitly glorify violence as a positive or necessary action, particularly without critical analysis or contextualisation.
Any book or teaching that promotes the view of another group, race, or sex as "lesser people."
Any book or teaching that normalises or encourages the breaking of current UK laws by the child reading or the protagonist.
Legal Penalties for Non-Compliance: Establish clear legal penalties for any entity (e.g., publishers, retailers, educational institutions) or parent who knowingly allows children to access age-restricted materials. This mirrors existing legislation for other age-restricted items, providing a mechanism for intervention and accountability in cases of deliberate harm or neglect.
Mandatory Critical Reasoning Education in Schools: Implement comprehensive, age-appropriate critical reasoning classes in all schools. These classes will empower children to:
Evaluate information critically, understanding that age, tradition, popularity, or authority does not equate to truth, morality, or benefit.
Distinguish between fact from opinion.
Understand the importance of evidence in forming beliefs.
Approach challenging ideas constructively and develop resilience against misinformation.
Why Now?
The proliferation of information in the digital age makes children more susceptible than ever to harmful narratives. It is time to act decisively to curb the spread of violence, hate, and manipulative ideologies, ensuring our children grow into well-adjusted, empathetic, and critically thinking adults. Failure to act will allow the cycle of misinformation and harmful indoctrination to continue.
