For years, I have been deeply inspired by the commitment and service of the American Legion and its associated organizations. These exceptional groups provide vital support for our veterans and their families, preserving the legacy of sacrifices made by those who served in uniform. However, while we have an active and thriving Sons of the American Legion (SAL), there is a glaring omission: a comparable organization specifically for women—the Daughters of the American Legion.

The Sons of the American Legion has done an exemplary job in honoring and serving the legacy of the military service of their forefathers. The SAL operates at every level of the American Legion, from national to state, and down to district posts. They provide not only support but also create a sense of community and continuity. It is time that we extend this opportunity to the daughters, sisters, and female relatives of those who served, who are just as committed to the mission of supporting our veterans.

Imagine a brigade of passionate women coming together under the same mission-driven umbrella. A place where the daughters of veterans can honor their heritage, boost community projects, and contribute their unique talents to support the American Legion’s objectives. Creating a Daughters of the American Legion (DAL) squadron for each Post from National to State and District not only balances the scales but also enriches the American Legion family as a whole.

Consider this fact: According to recent statistics from the National Center for Veterans Analysis and Statistics, women now make up nearly 10% of the veteran population. These women deserve the opportunity to engage directly in the noble mission of the American Legion, in ways beyond the auxiliary roles traditionally offered.

By instituting the Daughters of the American Legion, we open doors for thousands of women eager to serve and honor their family's military history in a collective, organized way. We strengthen the bond between all branches and extensions of service-focused American Legion organizations, fostering a unified presence that reflects modern societal values.

To make this vision a reality, we must appeal to the national leadership of the American Legion. I urge them to recognize the need for an inclusive organization where daughters can nurture this legacy of service. Establishing this charter is not just a gesture of equality but a necessary evolution in our continuing mission to support veterans from every possible angle.
