Remove Dr. Julie Vaishampayan from her position as public health officer
Remove Dr. Julie Vaishampayan from her position as public health officer
The Issue
In the past few weeks, Dr. Julie Vaishampayan has advocated for policies that have been proven to be inadequate in fighting COVID-19. As representative of the Office of Public Health in Stanislaus County, her job is to advise policy heads such as the Office of Education and the various cities within the county on what to do in terms of their public health situations. Unfortunately, her policies have been reactionary, not preventative in nature, which is detrimental to the safety and health of the residents of Stanislaus County. Her advice of not closing schools has been reversed through student action, but residents fear her further advice may end up spreading the contagion further. She has been quoted in the Modesto Bee as saying that not everyone has to test (“Stanislaus County health official talks transmission...” 3/12/20) and that even though things are going to get worse, a lockdown wouldn’t necessarily help (“As cases grow... 3/18/20). Her presence and public statements made as Stanislaus County’s Public Health Officer during this trying time has shown that she does not have the proper understanding or knowledge to take on the COVID-19 crisis. It is with firm resolution that I argue and advocate for the removal of Dr. Julie Vaishampayan from her position as Public Health Officer of Stanislaus County.
