Stand with the Writers Guild of America
The Issue
As you may have heard, Hollywood writers are on strike, and this is the first time this has happened in 16 years. The unions representing 11,500 movie and television writers went on strike on May 2nd, and it has brought much production to a halt. The reason for the strike is because television production has grown rapidly over the past decade, but the writers' compensation has not kept pace with the industry's growth. According to WGA leaders, the current system is broken and the survival of writing as a profession is at stake in this negotiation.
The strike is not just about compensation but also about the writers' rights. The streaming world has eroded their working conditions, and writers are fighting for better residual pay—a type of royalty for reruns and other showings—which they have said is a critical source of income. Before streaming, writers received a percentage of earnings every time a show or movie was shown on TV. With streaming, they’re no longer receiving this money since viewers can watch the content whenever they want and don’t have to wait for reruns. Additionally, they are fighting what they describe as abuses of mini-rooms. Writers in mini-rooms will sometimes work for as little as 10 weeks and then have to scramble to find another job.
If the strike continues, we will likely begin to notice a dip in new TV series. Late night shows, including "Saturday Night Live," and series like "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," have already decided to shut down in support of the strike. This is a significant event, and if we don't support the writers, it will have serious consequences for the industry.
We understand that the advertising market is grim and that many studios are adopting cost-saving measures. However, we believe that the writers' demands are fair and reasonable, and they deserve to be treated with respect. The writers are fighting for their livelihoods, and we can help them by showing our support. By signing this petition, we urge the Hollywood studios to take the writers' demands seriously and come to a fair agreement.
As viewers, we have a stake in this industry, and we want to see it thrive. We cannot do that without the talented writers who create the content we love. Please sign this petition to support the writers.
