Stand with the workers at Kitty Cohen's

The Issue

We stand with the workers of Kitty Cohen's and their demands as stated below. The firing of Jacob Estes should be immediately undone. You should honor his federal rights to organize and he should be given no disciplinary actions upon returning to work. Before Jacob returns to work a safe environment must be created to allow the workers right to organize continue. A ULP has been filed.

Update 9/2/24

Things have been pretty intense around here as my ex coworkers and myself navigate the next steps. The issues highlighted in the demand letter have had a significant impact on our daily operations and team morale. Past this Jeremy has made us indentured laborers by providing us with short term loans with no payment schedule, and sends Jonathan after us once we get paid. Multiple staff members at Kittys have had to take such loans due to the low pay we receive. We had to deal with being harassed by multiple staff members, and only once the media and collective action became involved were those employees let go. This place is a total boys club.

I’m sharing a recent news article that covers the situation more thoroughly. It provides a comprehensive overview of the issues we’re facing and the steps we’re taking to address them. The media attention has added another layer of complexity, but we’re committed to handling everything with transparency and integrity.

Dear Jermey:

We the undersigned workers of Kitty Cohen’s are writing to express our concerns regarding our current wage rates. Despite our dedication to providing exceptional service and contributing to the business’ success, our wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of living. As you are aware, the cost of living in Austin has significantly increased, affecting our ability to cover basic expenses. Many of us are struggling to make ends meet and are being forced to take on additional jobs or seek other employment opportunities.

The City of Austin’s Living Wage is $20.80 per hour. We respectfully request that Kitty Cohen’s / Webberville Spirits, LLC review and adjust our pay rates to reflect these standards, ensuring that all employees can sustain a reasonable standard of living while continuing to deliver the high-quality service that our customers have come to expect.

 We propose the following adjustments:

Support Staff: Increase wage rate to $20.80 per hour with yearly increases and additional retroactive raises for employees based on a yearly model of seniority at a rate of $1.22/h per year.

Bartenders: Increase wage rate to $10.00 per hour with yearly increases, adjust the minimum daily payout from $100 to $150, and additional retroactive raises for employees based on a yearly model of seniority at a rate of $1.22/h per year.

Profit Sharing: Allocate 1% of quarterly profits to employees using a point system based on seniority, position, and hours worked to be paid out quarterly.

We engage in this collective, concerted activity under the protection of Federal Law, specifically, Section 7 of the National Labor Relations Act. We are also prepared to engage in further actions that are also protected by the Act if we do not receive a response to our request by August 24, 2024.

We are committed to working with you to address this issue and look forward to discussing potential solutions that can benefit both the employees and the business. “
