The Issue

Stand with Sarakki Lake Residents: Save Legally Built Homes
Protect Genuine Homeowners While Preserving Sarakki Lake
Sarakki Lake is one of Bengaluru's most valuable natural assets. We wholeheartedly support the protection, restoration, and conservation of the lake for present and future generations.

However, thousands of innocent families who have been living around Sarakki Lake for decades are now facing uncertainty due to notices issued following ongoing legal proceedings concerning the lake's buffer zone.

Many of these residents are not encroachers.

They purchased their properties legally, obtained approvals from the competent authorities, received sanctioned building plans, paid property taxes, and invested their lifetime savings in constructing their homes. They have lived peacefully in these homes for many years, believing they were fully compliant with the law.

Today, these families fear losing everything—not because of any wrongdoing on their part, but because policies and interpretations regarding lake buffer zones have changed over time.

According to the representation submitted to the Government of Karnataka, nearly 4,000 to 5,000 families living around Sarakki Lake could be affected if blanket action is taken. Similar situations exist around many lakes across Bengaluru, potentially affecting over 10 lakh families if the same approach is applied without distinguishing between illegal encroachments and legally approved residential properties. These concerns have been formally raised before the Government.

This is not merely a legal issue—it is a humanitarian issue.

Behind every house is a family.

Behind every family are senior citizens, children, students, working professionals, and small business owners whose lives could be severely disrupted.

We believe that protecting lakes and protecting law-abiding citizens are not mutually exclusive. Environmental conservation should continue without compromising the rights of innocent homeowners who relied on approvals issued by public authorities.

Our Demands
We respectfully urge the Government of Karnataka and all concerned authorities to:

Protect genuine homeowners who purchased properties legally and constructed homes based on valid government approvals.
Clearly distinguish between illegal encroachments and legally sanctioned residential buildings before taking any action.
Conduct an individual, transparent verification of each property rather than issuing blanket notices.
Present the complete historical facts and ground realities before the Hon'ble High Court.
Ensure that no innocent family is displaced without due process and a fair hearing.
Continue conserving Sarakki Lake while safeguarding the rights and dignity of long-standing residents.
Form a high-level committee with representatives from government departments, legal experts, environmental specialists, and residents to arrive at a fair and sustainable solution.
Why Your Signature Matters
This petition is not against protecting Sarakki Lake.

It is a call for justice, fairness, and balanced implementation of the law.

Thousands of families who trusted government approvals should not bear the consequences of administrative decisions made decades later.

We request the Government to adopt a humane and lawful approach that protects both our environment and our homes.

Together, we can ensure that Bengaluru remains a city that values environmental conservation while upholding justice for its citizens.
