Stand with Eastern Students: Support Free Speech and Peaceful Protest
The Issue
As students of Eastern Regional High School, we've experienced firsthand the suppression of our voices. The Free Palestine Walkout was an act intended to express our views and stand up for what we believe in. We are passionate about raising awareness for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine and showing solidarity with the Palestinian people. However, our efforts were met with opposition from the school administration.
Our walkout was abruptly canceled, and we were told that our voices were not welcome. This is not just about one event; it's about the fundamental right to free speech and peaceful protest. What's particularly frustrating is the double standard we've witnessed. Just last October, there was a walkout in support of Israel, and those students faced no scrutiny or punishment. Why are our voices being silenced while others are allowed to express their views freely?
Adding insult to injury, the school administration not only shut down our walkout but also suspended a few of our members, denying us the opportunity to peacefully express ourselves. This is a clear violation of our rights as students.
The school administration proposed a joint walkout as a compromise, suggesting that we walk out alongside a pro-Israel group. This is not a solution. It's an attempt to silence us and water down our message.
Why is it that the pro-Israel group was able to conduct their own solo walkout without facing any pushback, while we are met with resistance at every turn? It's clear that there is a double standard at play here, and it's unacceptable.
We refuse to be silenced. We refuse to back down. We demand justice, and we demand our right to free speech and peaceful protest. Stand with us in this fight by signing our petition and demanding that the school administration lift the unjust suspensions and respect our rights as students.
Every signature counts. Every voice matters. Let's make ourselves heard.
