Petition to the City of Cape Town

For more than 150 years, flower sellers have traded at Trafalgar Place on Adderley Street.

This vibrant flower market is one of the oldest traditions in Cape Town and an important part of the city’s cultural heritage. Families have worked here for generations, supplying flowers to residents, businesses, and visitors from around the world.

The City is now proposing a new Informal Trading Plan that would dramatically change the market by:

 • Limiting the market to only 20 demarcated trading bays

 • Restricting trading hours to 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM instead of the historic 24-hour trading tradition

 • Requiring long-standing flower sellers to apply for permits subject to City approval

 • Restructuring the historic market site without guaranteeing existing traders their place

These changes could displace traders, reduce livelihoods, and erase a tradition that has existed since the 1800s.

The Adderley Street Flower Market is not just informal trade. It is a living cultural landmark that makes Cape Town unique.

We call on the City to:

 1. Pause the proposed Informal Trading Plan affecting Trafalgar Place.

 2. Protect the Adderley Street Flower Market as a historic cultural site.

 3. Guarantee trading rights for existing flower sellers.

 4. Preserve the long-standing 24-hour trading tradition.

 5. Work with traders, not without them, to improve the market.

Cape Town should protect its heritage and the families who have sustained this market for generations.
