Millions of people were forced to flee the horrific war in Ukraine. European countries, including The Netherlands, welcomed the Ukrainian refugees with open arms.

If we learn anything from this shocking situation, it is that we cannot be selective about who deserves support and whose rights we defend.

For almost a year, thousands of refugees in the Netherlands have had to sleep in tents, gymnasiums and halls in what the Refugee Council describes as "inhumane conditions.” All while many hotels and other accommodations have sacrificed themselves to receive Ukrainian refugees.

In the past few weeks, the situation at the national asylum center at Ter Apel has reached crisis point. Volunteers had raised money for tents for the refugees, but the police took the tents away due to ‘safety and hygiene issues’.

The camp is badly overcrowded, and hundreds of people have had to sleep outside or on chairs in waiting rooms.

"The situation has fallen below the limit," the Refugee Council said. The racism towards refugees has hit a new point. In fact, hundreds of protesters gathered together to demonstrate against a hotel that is being turned into a shelter for refugees.

The Dutch government is legally obligated to offer these people a decent shelter. But they have yet to fulfill their duty. Sign our petition and help us protect the lives of Dutch refugees!
