Stand Up for Our Four-Legged Friends! Attend Spokane City Council Meeting on 9/25/23

The Issue

As a concerned resident of Spokane, WA, I am writing this petition to urge all community members to join me in attending the upcoming Spokane City Council meeting on September 25th, 2023 at 6:00 PM. This meeting holds immense significance for our beloved four-legged friends and their well-being.

This issue is deeply personal to me because it directly affects the lives of innocent dogs in our community. I recently came across distressing information that SCRAPS (Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service) has been resorting to executing dogs as a means of population and behavioral control. This practice is not only cruel but also goes against the very essence of compassion and responsibility that we should uphold as a society.

It is crucial for us, as compassionate individuals and responsible pet owners, to come together and demand change from our local authorities. By attending this council meeting en masse, we can demonstrate the strength of our collective voice and push for an end to these unnecessary dog executions.

To support our cause effectively during this council meeting, it is essential that we present accurate facts and statistics. Here are some key points:

1. According to data from SCRAPS' own records obtained through public records requests:
- In recent days , an alarming number of healthy dogs (14) have been euthanized due solely to lack of space or resources.
- The current approach fails both animals and taxpayers by not prioritizing alternative solutions such as increased adoption efforts or partnerships with animal rescue organizations.
- Other cities across the country have successfully implemented innovative programs aimed at reducing euthanasia rates without compromising public safety.

2. A study conducted by renowned animal welfare organization ASPCA found that communities implementing comprehensive strategies focused on proactive pet retention programs experienced significant reductions in shelter intake numbers while simultaneously increasing live release rates.

3. Numerous cities, including Austin, Texas, and Portland, Oregon, have successfully transitioned to no-kill policies by implementing community-based programs that emphasize spaying/neutering, responsible pet ownership education, and accessible low-cost veterinary services.

By attending the Spokane City Council meeting on 9/25/23 in large numbers and presenting these facts to our local representatives, we can urge them to take immediate action. Our goal is not only to save the lives of countless innocent dogs but also to promote a more compassionate and responsible approach towards animal welfare in our community.

Let us come together as advocates for change and show our elected officials that we will not stand idly by while these unjust practices continue. Sign this petition today and commit to attending the Spokane City Council meeting on 9/25/23. Together, we can make a difference for our four-legged friends who rely on us for their safety and well-being. If you will be attending please wear black as a sign of morning and solidarity.

If you are able to please send an email of encouragement and thanks to Council member Michael Cathcart (mcathcart@spokanecity.org) and Karen Stratton (kstratton@spokanecity.org).  With out them this would not be happening.

Remember: Every voice matters when it comes to protecting those who cannot speak for themselves.
