Stand Up for Nursing Students in Kent - Don't Compromise Our Future!
The Issue
As a nursing student in Kent, I am deeply concerned about the recent decision made by Canterbury Christ Church and the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) to require us to redo hours that were promised to be sufficient for completing our degrees and becoming qualified nurses. This decision puts our future at stake, jeopardizing our job security, professional status, and degree completion. We cannot let this injustice go unchallenged.
Personal Story:
Our journey as a nursing students has been filled with dedication, hard work, and sacrifices. Like many of my fellow colleagues, we have poured countless hours into my studies and clinical placements with the understanding that these experiences would equip us with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the healthcare profession confidently.
However, just when we thought we were nearing the finish line of our education journey amidst a global pandemic that has already taken its toll on us emotionally and financially, we are faced with an unexpected setback. The NMC's decision to demand additional hours is not only unfair but also unrealistic given the limited resources available.
We have trusted in the university and there system that promised us enough hours to complete our degrees successfully. To now be told that those promises were empty is disheartening and demoralizing. It feels like all our efforts have been disregarded without any consideration for how this will impact our lives moving forward.
Relevant Facts:
1. According to data from universities across Kent, nursing students have already completed an average of 2-3 times more clinical placement hours than required by NMC guidelines.

2. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed immense pressure on healthcare systems worldwide, resulting in reduced opportunities for clinical placements.

3. Redoing additional placement hours would cause significant financial strain on students who are already facing mounting debts and limited income opportunities.

4. The shortage of qualified nurses in the UK is a pressing issue that requires urgent attention. Delaying our graduation and qualification will only exacerbate this problem.

We, the nursing students in Kent, urge the NMC to reconsider their decision under these exceptional circumstances. We understand the importance of practical experience, but we have already demonstrated our commitment and dedication throughout our studies.
By refusing to redo hours that were promised to be sufficient, we can ensure that our education is not compromised, allowing us to enter the healthcare workforce as qualified professionals without unnecessary delays.
Sign this petition today to support nursing students in Kent and demand justice for all those who have worked tirelessly towards their dream of becoming qualified nurses. Together, let's protect our future and secure a better healthcare system for all.
